Asbuton mining has started since the Dutch colonial era, precisely on October 21, 1924 when Asbuton mining concessions for 30 years was granted to a Dutch businessman named A. Volker.
Period of October 21, 1924 – August 19, 1926, the company’s ownership and management was run by A. Volker as the holder of Asphalt Mining Exploration and Exploitation Contracts in Buton Island.
Period of August 19, 1926 – October 21, 1954, the company’s ownership and management was run by Dutch state-owned company named .V. Mijnbow En Cultuur Maatshapij Boeton (MMB).
Period of October 21, 1954 – May 12, 1961, the company’s ownership and management was run by Ministry of Public Works, Roads and Bridges Service.
On May 12, 1961, based on the Government Regulation No. 3/1961, the government established State Asphalt Company (PAN), where Directorate Roads and Bridges merged into the State Asphalt Company.
Based on the Government Regulation no. 3/1984 on January 30, 1984, the status of State Asphalt Company was changed into State-owned Company. Realization of the State Asphalt Company changes into a State-owned Company (Persero) was implemented with the establishment of PT Sarana Karya (Persero) on September 1, 1984.
Based on the Government Regulation no. 91/2013 on December 24, 2013, all stocks of PT Sarana Karya (Persero) is sold to PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk. Since December 30, 2013 through the Sale and Purchase Agreement with the State-owned Enterprise Ministry, PT Sarana Karya officially became subsidiary of PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk. Company name then officially changed into PT Wijaya Karya Bitumen on 7 July 2014.
